Tough GP in Swedish mud for Barragan

After an impressive double win last weekend in Spain Jonathan Barragan and his team were keen to perform in Sweden. Unfortunately Jonathan had to settle for twelfth position overall at what was the ninth round of sixteen in the 2012 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Mixed weather conditions on Saturday had turned the course into a treacherous place. However, starting from 17th position behind the gate, Jonathan steered his CRF450R to a fine eighth place. The multiple Spanish champ thus entered Sunday’s events confidently. By the start of the races the Uddevalla track had received a muddy make-over, making dirt watery and slippery in some places and rough and rutted in others. Twenty-two thousand spectators lined the track and witnessed Barragan getting off to a difficult start. He was 20th after the opening lap but pulled through for a 12th place finish despite a crash.

A second crash of the day, early on in the second moto made things even harder for Jonathan. The Spaniard circulated in 25th position but on a positive note the afternoon sunshine had helped to dry the track. Determined as ever Barragan recovered and made his way through the pack, climbing up to 13th in the second half of the race The LS Honda Racing rider still battled on but the gap with riders in front of him was too big. Jonathan is currently fourteenth in standings 8 points behind Sébastien Pourcel who is 12th.

Jonathan Barragan: “It wasn’t a good day. In the second race I crashed and in the first the opening few laps were terrible. I feel that it was a big shame to go down so early in the second moto because the result could have been better than thirteenth. My rhythm was consistent, but not enough. I couldn’t do more today. Both the team and I are working very hard and the results haven’t been what we hoped so far. It is taking a lot to find our way into that top eight but it is not through a lack of effort or desire.”
