Hawkstone Park has seen some fantastic motocross battles over the years and today it played host to another.
Martin Barr led the riders to the line after snatching pole position in qualifying, laying his cards firmly on the table and taking the Red Bull pro National Championship fight to our own Buildbase Honda racer Nico` Aubin.
Championship leader Aubin chose his place on the start line second with Gert Krestinov third.
Moto 1 saw the CRF450 Buildbase Honda force its way to the front of the field only to be passed by both Barr and Alex Snow by the third turn. The race began to develop with Barr pulling steadily ahead and Aubin now desperate to find a way back past Snow made his move down the infamous Hawkstone hill and set his sights on Barr.
Just a few laps later and Aubin was on the heels of Barr and coming past the start/finish line second at the base, the power of the mighty 450 Honda pulled it`s way past Barr up the Hawkstone Hill but the battle was just beginning as Barr took the Frenchman straight back.
With the championship at stake and (now ex-) title contender Stephen Sword already on his way to hospital with a broken collar-bone, Barr and Aubin traded places and with Nico leading, they pulled away from the trailing Krestinov. Something had to give and Barr crashed out on the last lap handing the win to Aubin, he remounted to finish second with Krestinov third.
Aubin also hit the front of Moto 2 off the start but Barr overhauled him once again and began to pull away leaving Krestinov hounding Nico. The fighting foreigners began to close on Barr at the front and as the three were locked in battle once again, Aubin made the move and took the lead. He didn`t look back and won by 8 seconds. Krestinov also stole second from Barr who fizzled to third at the flag and on the day.
Nico Aubin – “I am pleased with today. Everything went well for me but I had to fight for it. I feel I am returning to form and the bike and the team are all working well so it is a winning combination. I am happy to be leading the championship but I know I have to work hard at the final round at Culham next month. I am looking forward to Langrish tomorrow and hope I can continue to win on my 250”.
