Paulin settles into third in MX1 world championship

Having won on the infamous Lierop circuit previously in 2010 in the MX2 class, Gautier Paulin was confident coming into round 14 of the 16 round series over the weekend.

A huge crowd turned out in great weather conditions to line what is possibly the most treacherous and demanding sand circuit in the world. Paulin got into a good rhythm in his Saturday qualification heat to finish fourth for a good gate pick on Sunday.

In his best start of the year Paulin grabbed an early lead but a mistake allowed Max Nagl to pass as he latched onto the German. A loss of rhythm allowed Cairoli, de Dycker, Leok and Desalle past but Paulin recovered and put in a last minute charge to pass Desalle in the final corner with a superb maneuver to claim 5th place.

The second moto would be far from Paulin’s best performance in the sand. He battled to find his groove and could not challenge as he had in the first moto. Salvaging 9th spot was all the Frenchman had in the can with the consolation that has now taken over 3rd in the championship series.

Gautier Paulin: “I was happy with my qualifying race, where I finished fourth after a strong race. Today was different; in the first heat I got a great start and found a good rhythm but I made several mistakes to finish fifth. It was positive, but my second start was not so good and I nearly crashed when Nagl and Gonçalves collided; then I made some more mistakes and finished ninth. I was hoping for better results here, but this year the track was not as technical as usual and it was another new experience.”

The penultimate round of the series takes place in Faenza next week.
