Danny McCanney maintains third in Junior WEC

Danny McCanney survived the tough Italian round of the 2012 Enduro World Championship this weekend with a creditable 4-6 scorecard to maintain his third place standing in the Junior world championship.

Being McCanneyʼs first full season of world championship enduro, this was the first time the young Manxman had experienced Italian conditions – long hard days riding over hard ground with plenty of rock, in heat consistently over 40ºC.

Danny McCanney: “That was the toughest enduro yet. The heat was so oppressive it was like riding with a hair drier blowing in your face the whole time. For seven hours each day there was no let up longer than five minutes, so were fighting a losing battle against exhaustion and dehydration. So many riders were on a drip by the end of the day, others had DNFʼd, unable to continue.
“I was fairly happy with my riding, I got to set a fastest test time plus other top-three times, but keeping up the pace for a whole day each day was very hard. This was my first time riding in conditions like this, so it was a good learning experience and Iʼm happy that I was able to do an effective job of damage limitation – Iʼm still third in the championship and with a gap of 16 points to second Iʼm still within striking distance with plenty of races to go.”

Steve Plain, Gas Gas UK team manager: “Danny rode a brilliant weekend. Usually his ʻbrilliantʼ means a win or a podium at least, but these were conditions that heʼs never ridden before and heʼs riding in a class thatʼs packed with Southern European talent, who have been brought up riding this terrain in this kind of heat. To fight his way to the results he did, in the circumstances, was something special.

“Dannyʼs kept himself right in there, in the championship top-three, and with the next EWC rounds coming in Sweden and Finland – which should be sand, and forests, and much more suited to Dannyʼs experience – Iʼm sure weʼll see him counter-attack very effectively there!”

McCanneyʼs next race is round three of the 2012 British Enduro Championship at Hafren, Wales on July 14-15.
