Big entry for “Simon Rees memorial” Hare ‘n Hounds

An excellent entry of 67 riders competed in Rhayader Motor Clubs 10th annual running of the “Simon Rees memorial” Hare ‘n Hounds at Cwmythig Hill last Sunday. The Club had set out a 3-mile circuit including the popular Hillside motocross circuit as well as nearby fields, which resulted in some excellent racing in all classes.

Local hotshot Shaun Buchan (Llanidloes) led the Expert field early on, but hot on his heels was Welsh 6 day Enduro team members Rheinallt Davies (Machynlleth) & Gethin Price (Hundred House). By the end of the gruelling 3 hour non-stop race it was Davies who took the honours with 18 laps to his credit, while brother Gareth Davies (Machynlleth) took runner-up spot 4 minutes adrift, while Price finished third just under 30 seconds behind Davies.

On-form Alwyn Watkins (Bwlch-yr-Sarnau) swept up the Clubman class with a great performance completing 17 laps, while rival youngster Adam James (Rhayader) had to settle for the runner-up spot; just a couple of minutes separated these two. Huw Jones (Machynlleth) took a very creditable 3rd place 2 laps down on Watkins.

The Novice class saw Will Taylor (Machynlleth) take the win with 15 laps just beating off nearest rival Sion Thomas (Machynlleth) by 2 minutes. Steve Price (Brecon) finishing in 3rd a close 7 seconds down on Thomas.

Taking the honours in the Motocross group was Rhayader’s Ryan Jones completing 16 laps.

As well as catering for Solo’s, Rhayader Motor Club also had a large Sidecars group.

Top in the Sidecars section were the on-form David Williams/Graham McPhee (Llanidloes/Rhayader) with 16 laps, Brothers Neil & Marc Rowlands (Llanidloes) finished 2nd, 4 minutes adrift of Williams/Mcphee with Simon Bradford/Simon Morgan (New Radnor) 2 laps down in 3rd.
