Pontrilas Championship Preview – Mike Wood
The Gloucester MXC stage a bumper two-day event which will include AMCA Championship Action for MX1, MX2, Two-Stroke and Veterans classes. On Sunday, the main MX1 and MX2 title chases top the bill as they go into round three action whilst on Bank Holiday Monday it’s the turn of the Two-Stroke and Veterans riders to write the headlines.
In the two MX1 rounds completed so far, Clinton Barrs, Lee Dunham and Lee Payne have shared the moto wins and are also currently the early Championship top three. In very difficult conditions during the latest action at Brookthorpe, Barrs claimed the overall win to thus now top the standings. Clinton’s advantage though is just 9 points with reigning Champ Lee Dunham ready to pounce!! After taking all three race wins during round one at Long Lane, Lee Payne suffered a disaster in the Brookthorpe mud and will certainly be determined to bounce back in style this time around!!.
On the podium during round two and producing an outstanding performance was Lewis Belfield whilst Tim Burrows and Chad Yarranton have also shown very impressive early season form. Other riders to also watch out for in MX1 at Pontrilas include the likes of Scott Bates, Michael Smith, Luke Dean, Shaun Pearce, Aran Agius, Elliot Barrs, Tye Barrs, Jamie Dobson and Stephen Tillotson.

Two-Stroke power currently leads the way in the 2012 AMCA MX2 title race, under the Expert and very capable hands of pilot Ben Saunders. Although Ben has yet to bag a moto win, he has displayed great consistency to finish overall runner-up at both Long Lane and Brookthorpe. So far this season, Scott Mathia, Brandon Benjamin, Jack Cox and Paul Neale have been the race victors and by also adding the likes of Carl Benjamin, Ryan Crowder, Shane Holmes and Sean Frayne into the mix, MX2 is again beginning to look like it as all the ingredients for a very exciting and tasty title battle!!.

During the latest Brookthorpe action, Cox made his intentions for the season perfectly clear by taking the overall verdict, a great result considering this was only his second AMCA Championship event. After finishing on the podium during round one, Brandon Benjamin was forced to use brother Carl’s bike for moto two and three at Brookthorpe. So also watch out for Brandon at Pontrilas along with the likes of Scott Williams and James Lane.

With round one Two-Stroke victor Matthew Williamson a non-starter during the latest action at Ollerton, Kawasaki mounted Adam Harris took full advantage to soar to the top of the standings. In all three moto’s at Ollerton, Adam was first past the winning post and now leads the title race, 26 points ahead of Sean Eckerseley. Sean has finished on the podium during both rounds so far, proving to be a very capable challenger for honours. At present, Dale Halls holds 3rd just ahead of Sam Callow and Terry Lloyd who are locked together on 246 points apiece.

After round one, Matt Ryder led the 2012 Veterans title chase but now following the Ollerton round has dropped to 4th spot behind Brian Staples, Colin Conduit and Sean Smith. During round two, Matt started with a DNF in a meeting won by Sean Smith and which also saw Staples and Graham Nicklin on the podium. So far all of the current top four have won at least one moto each and in the early exchanges appear to be serious title contenders!!.
