With the Country battered by a seemingly relentless band of wet weather, the 2012 motocross fixture list as been a sorry story of constant cancellations, one of the major victims being the AMCA MX Championships. So incredibly this weekend at Brookthorpe, near Gloucester in a meeting hosted by Cheltenham MXC we have reached just the second round!
Way back in early June the opening meeting of the 2012 AMCA MX Championships at Long Lane, Shropshire produced an abundance of great racing, drama and even maiden moto wins for MX2 pilots Scott Mathia and Brandon Benjamin, Cheshire charger Mathia also bagged a first Championship overall win and will be determined to enjoy the sweet taste of victory again, but can he repeat that feat down in Gloucestershire?
In the MX2 class expect the experienced Ben Saunders aboard his rapid 150cc Two-stroke KTM to be right on the gas and taking the challenge to Scott Mathia. During round one, Ben finished runner-up in MX2, joined on the podium by a very delighted Brandon Benjamin. In making the podium, Brandon even outscored his brother Carl so who will come out on top this weekend in the battle of the talented Dursley MXC lads? Also expect the likes of rising star Jack Cox who was very impressive on his AMCA Championship debut, Paul Neale and Ryan Crowder to be in the mix again with IMBA rider Neale determined to make up ground after a couple of falls at Long Lane restricted him to 5th overall.
Another rider playing catch up and definitely worth watching out for at Brookthorpe will be reigning Champion Shane Holmes, 9th overall during round one after enduring one of those crazy day’s when he unfortunately found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time! At Long Lane, injured MX2 stars Sean Frayne, James Lane and Ryan Morris all contested, hoping to pick up as many points as possible. However now that they have had extra time to return to full racing fitness they should be right up the leaderboard this time out!!.
One rider travelling to Brookthorpe in confident mood will be AMCA MX1 Championship leader Lee Payne. After bagging a simply superb maximum at Long Lane, Payne a very determined rider is sure to be right on the gas and gunning for glory again this weekend! Currently sharing 2nd place in the early MX1 table are reigning King Lee Dunham, a rider with a good knowledge of the Brookthorpe circuit and Clinton Barrs, riding in his home AMCA Group, Clinton has extra reason to look forward to the Championship round two and is sure to be pumped for this weekend. With Clinton sitting in joint 2nd in the AMCA MX1 contest, his brother Tye is holding 7th whilst cousin Elliot utilised all of his vast experience at Long Lane to bag a very strong 5th, thus making it a very happy day for the Barrs clan!!.
Claiming a great runners-up spot in the final MX1 moto at Long Lane, Shropshire star Shaun Pearce is holding an impressive 4th spot in the Championship. Other riders looking to strengthen their position in the early standings after a profitable round one will be the likes of Stephen Tillotson, Luke Spence, Tim Burrows, Chad Yarranton and Michael Reynolds.
In MX1, one rider though who was definitely not happy during round one after finishing 12th overall following a moto two DNF was youngster Luke Dean. Earlier, Luke on his Championship debut had posted the fastest qualifying time, so expect him to be right on the gas and gunning for a very big points haul which could fire him right back into title contention!!.
So after the enforced break, who will be those riders celebrating on Sunday evening after their return to AMCA Championship action? Well let’s find out as it’s time to pin back that throttle, drop the clutch and go racing!!.Good luck to all competitors this weekend.

AMCA launch rider incentive scheme – GO FOR GOLD and reap the rewards!
Free Dirt Bike Show tickets
Beach Race entry for £23!!
The AMCA has launched an incentive scheme to benefit it’s riders who ride at the most motocross events.
The organising body has for many years had a gold / silver / bronze scheme in place which categorises riders by the number of mx events they rode at in the previous year.
For 2012 the AMCA have added a number of benefits to give real value to the scheme.
To achieve gold status riders will have had to take part in 27 events in the 2012 season, when they apply for a licence the following year it will be a ‘gold’ licence.
Despite the recent heavy rain there are still plenty of opportunities to enter AMCA events and make sure you qualify for these great offers.
This year to encourage you to strive for gold AMCA are offering all riders who achieve Gold status this season by 14th October a FREE ticket to the 2012 Dirt Bike Show at Stoneleigh!
In addition, they can also enter the fabulous SKEGNESS Beach Race on 17th / 18th November for the standard AMCA entry fee of £23!! A massive potential saving of £77!!
TWO EXCELLENT REASONS for entering as many events as possible between now and 14th October!
To achieve gold status you need to have competed at 27 motocross events between the 1st February and 14th October 2012, all AMCA authorised MX events qualify.
Gold status riders also benefit the following season by receiving preferential entry into oversubscribed events or classes.
On the 15th October we will contact via text and email all those who have qualified with details of how they can claim the above offers.
The AMCA Chairman Terry King said ‘we want to reward our most loyal riders and these two benefits offer significant savings for those riders who take part in the most events’.
In the meantime, good luck and enjoy the rest of the 2012 AMCA season – Go for Gold!!
