Round 1 G&G Ross Irish Championship - Vernon Mount, Cork 'Frustrating' day at Vernon Mount

This weekend saw the Irish MX1 Championship kick off at the redesigned Cork circuit in
Southern Ireland. The Munster club hired renowned GP track builder Johnny Douglas
Hamilton over the winter to work his magic and the riders were not disappointed.

JAR Honda rider Michael McCammond rode his CRF450R in the open class and
experienced a few problems in the timed qualifying session where he eventually ended up
in 7th position on the stony hard-pack circuit.

Nineteen year old McCammond, who is riding the larger capacity bikes this season for the
first time, suffered with arm pump in all three 20-minute plus a lap motos. After a terrible
start in race one young McCammond finished up 7th in a pretty uneventful race. The
second two motos were much more positive as he was riding the MX1 machine a lot
smoother, ending up finishing 6th and 5th.

Michael McCammond 7-6-5
“To be honest I am a little frustrated today as in the second two motos I was riding
really well until about the 15 minute stage and then I lost a lot of ground to the front
guys. I know that I am fast enough but when I am struggling with arm pump I don’t
want to lose control and crash. In the end I have finished all races today with decent
points, and the next track will really suit me and the bike so I look forward to moving up
the ladder.”

Jonathan Rea – Team Manager
“I was able to attend the first round this weekend and was really surprised at the speed of
the front guys. Right now we have a little work to do, but Michael knows where we need to
improve. Maybe there is something he can change in his programme so that we can get rid
of this arm pump. Aside from that it is a steady start to the Irish Championship and we are
still on target to achieve our goals.”
