Red Bull Elite Youth Academy takes off

Red Bull have cemented their commitment to give wings to the next generation of motocross high-fliers by confirming dates and venues for their inaugural Red Bull Elite Youth Academy.

Headed up by British MX legend Dave Thorpe, the academy will pluck the stand-out riders from the ranks of the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup and school them over a series of four one-day motocross
masterclasses led by the three-time world champ with additional tuition from top Red Bull athletes including GP riders Jake Nicholls and Elliott Banks-Browne.

Up to 10 riders split between two classes will be invited to each of the academy dates at some of Britain’s leading practice facilities. The selection criteria is simple with the top three riders from the 65cc, SW85cc, BW85cc and Rookie divisions all getting the call-up along with two wildcard riders from each class hand-picked by Dave.

“We want to help these riders reach their true potential,” explains Dave. “It’s about giving young riders the opportunity to benefit from my enthusiasm and knowledge combined with the support of Red Bull. I want people to know that Red Bull really are interested in the youth development programme in the UK. It’s always been a passion of mine to see the next British world champion and they share my enthusiasm in the development of the youth riders.

Red Bull UK are providing a fantastic opportunity for the kids – something that certainly didn’t exist when I was riding – and it’s something I feel we should be very grateful to them for.”

The academy kicks off on July 17 with a date for 65cc riders at Apex Motocross, then moves to Cusses Gorse on July 31 when it’ll be the turn of the SW and BW85cc pilots. Dave and his team then travel to Tonymoto on August 16 with a date for BW85cc and Rookie riders before signing off with a specially selected group of up-and-coming stars drawn from all four classes at Jake Nicholls’ private track at his home on the outskirts of Ipswich on August 21.

“Dave and I are incredibly passionate about bringing on the next wave of motocross stars and it’s a goal we share with Red Bull UK who are fully committed to the cause,” adds Matt Bates, Managing Director of Red Bull Elite Youth Cup promoters Events22. “We’re very lucky to have the support of such a forward-thinking partner and I’m confident that it won’t be long before we see their investment in our top youth riders start to pay dividends.”
